View Full Version : Epicly Important Pro Tools MIDI Question!

Why are all of my diagonal lines turning into staircases?
I used to get smooth transitions and slides and fades and everything but they will suddenly only adjust incrementally to the grid with any tool. TOTALLY obnoxious and definitely stands to ruin an important mix session.

Do you mean that the lines are straight when you save and quit, but when you open the session the next time they somehow turn weird?
I don't understand what your pictures are supposed to represent.
Are they pre and post after things went fucky or what?

Yeah, for example, if I wanted to do a cutoff dive, I would just grab a dot and make a diagonal line by sliding it down. You can see in these pictures the same thing. It did it to ALL of my automation data on EVERY instrument.
I bounced a rough last night with everything working, after many opens, saves, and closes, and when I opened it just now it was like this.

PS that first image is the same variable on the same plugin, but in a blank session I just created.

I really don't know much about PT midi myself.
Do the cut off dives (for example) sound different or like there's something wrong with them, or is it just visual thing?

Crap. I was hoping there was some keystroke for toggle wax on/off that you were going to teach me.
No that crappy looking staircase line sounds like a frozen turd being stuck through a giant pencil sharpener walking backwards. It's supposed to sound like the glorious majesty of my track's (figuratively)deafening awesomeness, which is what the diagonal slidey lines sound like.
Also worth noticing, my rough has an interesting error occuring. Halfway through the track, the bass changes pit for a bit. I didn't automate that and there is no evidence of it in the session.

That's it. I've seen enough evidence.
I'm going back to ADATs.
Cheers :)

There probably is.
If it's a bug (which I'm hoping it's not) PT bugs are hella fucked, can't do nothing about them, at least not the biggest ones..

AFAIK there's an "automation thinning" function in Pro Tools. Thinning the automation should make the session a lot easier on the CPU. Except I don't think that it would operate automatically.

O,
It's also this way in the backups and it doesn't happen in new sessions. Any ideas?

None.
We need a Pro Tools Jedi in here.
Someone with a lot of Midi-Chlorians.
(yeah, I know....)

At least I'm still learning while I wait

Update:
I created a blank session, demonstrated the ability to drag the dots into diagonal lines, created the same synth, demonstrated diagonal lines once again, imported the synth from the other track, option+dragged the midi region from the old track to my new track, and my crappy lines were there. I demonstrated that I could still draw diagonals and all my old diagonals popped right back. I tried to import this track into the original session with no luck. Contemplate.

Opened the new session again, tried to change the tempo. Problems arose. Lines vanished. Dots remained.

Those of us here who use Pro Tools for the most part aren't MIDI types.
You'll probably get a much better response in http://duc.avid.com/

Who needs a Jedi when we have Bob O. Fett? :D

Frozen turd in a pencil sharpener! Sounds so bad.
