The Honorable Charles F. Bolden, Jr.
Administrator
National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Two Independence Square
300 E Street, SW
Washington, DC 20546

Dear Administrator Bolden:

I am writing you concerning Google Inc.’s (Google’s) partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its activities at Moffett Federal Airfield (Moffett Airfield) in Santa Clara County, California. My office recently received troubling allegations regarding the Google fleet of aircraft housed at Moffett Airfield.

As you know, this private airport is operated by the NASA Ames Research Center, and according to public reports, Google signed a forty year lease with NASA in 2008 for 42 acres at Moffett Airfield for $3.7 million per year.

According to information provided to my office, Google allegedly houses a variety of airliners including a Boeing 767, a Boeing 757, multiple Gulfstream G550s and helicopters.

Whistleblowers have questioned the benefit to the U.S. government from the Google fleet being housed at Moffett Airfield. A recent investigative report analyzed Google flight tracking data, which indicated only five percent of flights were science missions.

Further, many Google jets based at Moffett Airfield allegedly have flown all over the world, including Italy, the Caribbean, China and Ireland.

Additionally, my office received allegations that Google has purchased jet fuel from the government at a discounted price, a price allegedly well below the market price due to its tax treatment.

In order to gain a more complete understanding of these allegations, please respond to the following requests:

1) How did NASA arrive at the lease amount of $3.7 million per year? Does that represent a fair market rate for the lease? Which individuals at NASA and Google negotiated the lease amount?

2) As of the date of this letter, how many aircraft owned or operated by Google are present at Moffett Airfield? Provide detailed descriptions of all aircraft.

3) Why does Moffett Airfield house Google aircraft and when did this arrangement begin? Provide all contracts between Google, NASA, and/or the military related to aircraft and aircraft fuel at Moffett Airfield.

4) Please describe the agreements by which Google obtains fuel for its aircraft at Moffett Airfield and provide fueling records for each aircraft over the past five years.

5) Are any of the aircraft used to support NASA research? Provide a specific explanation regarding the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet.

6) Have any NASA officials flown on the Google aircraft? Please provide a list of each official and describe the nature and purpose of each trip in detail.

7) For each aircraft owned or operated by Google, provide all flight plans and passenger manifests for each flight originating and landing at Moffett Airfield in the last five years.

8) In the last five years, have any other aircraft owned by private companies or individuals housed aircraft at Moffett Airfield? If yes, provide a detailed description of the aircraft, the ownership of the aircraft.

Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to these matters. I would appreciate receiving a response by no later than May 25, 2012. Should you have any questions, please contact Brian Downey or Rob Donovan of my staff.

Sincerely,

For the last half of a year I have been attending a music production school and in one of my recent classes I was assigned a fairly interesting project. We were given 2 tracks. A vocal, and an acoustic guitar. We were tasked to "produce" it and turn it into a full production in whatever direction we thought was appropriate for the song with the hypothetical situation that we are trying to impress the client (in other words not for our own simple creative endeavor) Long story short, I decided on some sort of hard rock/pop rock hybrid and this is what came out. Everything other than the vocals and little tidbits of acoustic guitar are me.

http://soundcloud.com/modestmousetrap/mind

also on a sidenote: I think this is the fastest I have ever been able to pull something together. Tracked and mixed in the last 30 hours.

Thank you Mixerman for introducing me to the concept of aggressive mixing. I have been forcing myself to commit to my ideas and I feel it's been paying off.

I would like to know if you have discovered an analogue compressor which has some relatively strong (normally still quite subtle) pass through character. i.e. it might add a little mid push, or a touch of bass, HF sheen or widen the stereo image a little.

Love to know your thoughts, an example is my HCL Varis a subtle widening and hf enhancement and a tiny tiny touch of bottom. I regularly use my compressors as tone boxes/subtle eq's. My Summt DCL-200 slope control is just like a tone control which can really soften top end and remove harshness in a pleasant benign way.

Hi all.

Just finished a DIY project. Or more correctly a DDMOTW project (Dad Did Most Of The Work). A custom made console for my Toft ATB-16 and my outboard. It was inspired by the Argosy desks for the Toft. I choose the word "inspired" since it has none of the same measurements as the Argosy. I just liked the shape of it.

Total cost for everything was about 3.500 swedish kronas, which converts to about $500 / 390 euros with todays rate. Pretty good considering that an Argosy will set you back about $2,500.

That includes;
- Three 2440x1220 mm MDF boards. 19 mm thick.
- One 2000x600 pine board for the sides.
- Rectangular steel pipes for the legs/frame
- Paint, white for the first layer and 3 layers of black + mohogny varnish for the pine sides.
- Fake black leather and padding (cheap 8 mm sleeping roll!)
- Black Rack Strips + screws

If you want me to post more shots of the building process let me know. I don't have a real drawing though. I tried Google Sketchup but gave up after a few tries.... did the whole thing in scale 1:1 in Illustrator.... but that will only give you a birds view and the correct millimeters... not the right angles and degrees. And we changed a few things as we went along. You always get the "Oh fuck... didn't think of that" moments when you dive into these kind of projects.

Anyway, I'm happy.

And I'm even more happy that I have a great dad that can help me with this kind of stuff. Mind you..... the ol' bastard turns 72 in september! Welds without a mask, climbs chimneys with fucking wood clogs on and refuses to wear ear protection when he drills. Typical stubborn dad ; )

Trouble recording yourself?

Hey everybody it’s my first post! Woohoo Partay! Guess what? I’m only posting because I’m going batshit crazy trying to work through this problem I...

Hey everybody it’s my first post! Woohoo Partay! Guess what? I’m only posting because I’m going batshit crazy trying to work through this problem I got. Doh! And it’s all guitar stuff! DOOOOH!

Seriously I’ve been able to work through some doozies and this one has been plaguing me. Trust me, you folks are my last resort. For months now I’ve basically been the guy who would rather drive around lost than stop and ask for directions but now I got nothing to lose so fuck it.

So without further ado, here’s the deal. As an engineer/producer I’ve had the pleasure of working with some real fine guitar players. As a guitar player myself I know what they want and how to get through to them and get the best performance out of them and I’ve done some work I’m really proud of.

For the life of me though, I can’t seem to record myself. I mean, process wise, sure. But tone wise I can’t figure out what the hell happened. Every time I lay a track down on anything, it’s got all these terrible overtones and harmonics that just sound like dogshit. Now there’s always some in pretty much everything I do with other people, but 2 or 3 notches with the EQ and it’s off to the races. But with me? There’s so many it’s unfixable.

So the first thing you’ll say is “garbage in garbage out your rig obviously sucks and you should get a new one.” To which I say, I got a bunch of guits and amps and I’ve been switching them all around and it’s the same thing.

“Must be the mic or mic placement.” Switched ‘em, moved ‘em around, same thing.

“Must be the room.” Then it would do this with everybody and it doesn’t. Just me.

“Well then it’s obviously your gear, pre’s, recording device, board, etc etc.”Well then why does everybody else sound great and only I sound like shit?

“Well dude, maybe it’s you.” Haven’t ruled this out. I’m a big boy, I can take it. I just wonder why I have recordings from a couple years ago using all of this exact same gear and everything was fine, and it was only about a year ago this started happening.

“Have you had your hearing checked?” Well, I’m a rock and rolla, it ain’t pefect, but again if frequencies were buzzing it would do that with everything and it doesn’t. Only me and only me playing any electric guitar in any way shape or form.

“Something with the setup, pups, strings, pick, no pick or alter your playing style?” Done ‘em all, no dice.
“You’re just being too picky.” Now I know this stuff just happens especially with Fenders, and like I said 2 or 3 hooters here and there is totally fixable, but these tracks are just filthy with ‘em and I can’t figure out why.

So I’ve been going in circles on this and now it’s time to do something crazy. I’ll leave it here for now but there is definitely more, including samples of what I’m talking about. Hopefully somebody can tell me what’s up or has gone through this kind of thing. It really is bizarre, but I am out of ideas, so beer’s on me when this bitch is in the rear view mirror…..

A few weeks ago there was a streak of burglaries in my area where the thieves were targeting large-sized TV sets and home theater set-ups. The preference was for sets 40-inches and larger.

A local insurance broker noticed that several of his clients who had sets stolen purchased them at the same York PA store which is a unit of a major electronics chain (PM me for name of store), and after talking with the burglary victims found a pattern that the sets were stolen between one and two weeks after purchase. So he got in contact with the state police who set up a sting operation where a plain-clothes officer purchased a plasma set and a "sound bar", gave a house address, and set the trap. Nine days later SNAP! the trap was sprung and three burglars were arrested.

It turns out the manager of the store was faxing the names and addresses of customers who purchased large ticket electronic items to his three associates for a cut of the action. The TV sets and related items were being resold "out of the back of a van" in Baltimore and New Jersey.

The moral here is, P.O. BOXES RULE!!!

Remember this story the next time you give out your home or studio address to a sales weasel.....
